点评:The official website of the Municipality of Acireale, under the "San Sebastiano" entry, currently states that this is "the most important church in Acireale".
It's difficult to give definitive words on this matter, and in particular, it's arguable whether the "mother church" (i.e., the nearby cathedral) is less important than the church of San Sebastiano. It's probably true, however, that San Sebastiano is the most scenic one, thanks to its elaborate late-Baroque façade and its equally striking balustrade, featuring sculptures of quite unusual subjects: Old Testament figures such as David, Jonah, Joshua, Eleazar, Moses, Aaron, Malachi, Joseph, Daniel, and Samson.
The façade-balustrade ensemble, carved by white limestone from the Syracuse area and recently cleaned of traffic smog, is undoubtedly striking and can easily be imagined as a "stone lace". The short span of time in which the ensemble was built (1699-1705 for the church, 1754 for the balustrade) and the absence of subsequent interventions (unlike what happened to the cathedral) produce an image of great beauty and harmony.
Obviously, as the construction dates indicate, this church is part of the urban and architectural reconstruction of eastern Sicily after the disastrous 1693 earthquake. Before the reconstruction, another church stood here, also dedicated to Saint Sebastian and completed in 1644; but I didn't find it legible in the current layout of the church.
Another strong point of interest for this church is that it represents perhaps the most important surviving testimony to the work of Pietro Paolo Vasta (1697-1760), a painter born in Acireale and very active, especially in the province of Catania. In fact, in addition to having provided the design for the biblical statues mentioned above (and carved by Giovan Battista Marino), he frescoed the large cycle of the “Stories of Saint Sebastian” inside the church (choir and transept) and biblical subjects in the drum and the sails of the dome.
