点评:Did you know that, among 117 national military cemeteries in the United States, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is the second largest, spanning 982 acres? Only Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California, is larger, covering 1,236 acres. Of course, they all rank behind Arlington National Cemetery, located across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., which has 400,000 graves in its 639 acres and is visited by over three million people annually. Located at 20953 West Hoff Road in Elwood, Illinois, in a space formerly occupied by the Joliet Arsenal, 50 miles southwest of Chicago, Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery was dedicated in 1999. In selecting the site, the landscape architects integrated Hoff Woods, the oldest remaining virgin woods in Illinois, into their design. A series of seven columbaria line the westernmost paths and five committal shelters in the site's northwest area enable multiple burial ceremonies to occur simultaneously. An extant thoroughfare, Diagonal Road, once the primary pioneer route from Chicago to Springfield, was retained. And a small pioneer burial ground also was preserved. Currently, 80,000 veterans have been buried on the property. But the cemetery calls for 400,000 burial spaces when completed. Burial is open to all members of the armed forces who have met a minimum active duty service requirement and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. One Medal of Honor recipient is buried on the property -- First Sergeant George T. Hyatt, who served with the 127th Illinois Infantry and was awarded for actions at Vicksburg on May 22, 1863, during the Civil War. Open from 8 to 4:30 Monday through Friday, visitors can stroll on the Memorial Walkway that commemorates service members of 20th century wars on 15 memorials and view two extraordinary sculptures -- an 18-foot-tall granite obelisk crowned by a bronze eagle with outstretched wings to commemorate the 2,403 Americans who died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and a life-size bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln that was dedicated on September 11, 2016.
