点评:In the Land of the Rising Sun, there are an estimated 100,000 Shinto shrines and 80,000 Buddhist temples. Kyoto alone, there are over 1,600 Buddhist temples and more than 400 Shinto shrines. Is one able to visit all the temples and shrines ? The answer is possible but highly unlikely as the temples & shrines are located all over Kyoto. Nanzenji temple was not in my initial itinerary, however, due to a change of plan, I decided to check it out. One cannot compare Nanzanji temple with Fushimi Inari Taisha or Kiyomizu dera, which I visited on day 2 and day 3. Nonetheless, Nanzenji temple, which happens to be the head temple of the Rinzai sect/school of Zen buddhism, certainly worth a visit. From the large gate called Sanmon(三门), to the Chisen Kaiyu style garden, it was such a pleasant walk with scenic spots all over, but none can beat the retro design of Suirokaku, which I was told, was built in 1888 to bring water from Lake Biwa to Kyoto. Nanzenji Temple may not be in the famous five Temple/Shrine, but it is one that I will highly recommend to visit while you are in Kyoto
