The trail is quite long, about 20 km, so it's worth starting earlier, say, 8 or 9 a.m. If you decide to take a taxi, remember that you're not the only one who wants to get there (and taxis will be available later, say, 10 a.m.). The Cumbre Vieja volcano itself will be visible during this hike, preferably from the Deseada peak (1933 m). For more experienced hikers, you can finish this trail lower down, near the ocean, in the town of Fuencaliente. It's important to remember that there are no taverns, shops, or shelters along the route from El Pilar to Los Canarios. Be sure to bring enough water and food. If you decide to descend all the way to the ocean, the trail between Los Canarios and Fuencaliente changes character significantly, becoming an interesting but open space.
