点评:Participating in a Melukat purification ceremony was one of our must-do experiences in Bali. After doing a lot of research, we decided not to visit Pura Tirta Empul, which is arguably Bali's most famous water temple. Instead, we chose Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu in the hope of having a quieter, more authentic experience, and we couldn't be happier with that decision.
We arrived at around 8:30 am, and I would highly recommend visiting early. The temple was peaceful when we arrived, although it was noticeably busier by the time we left about 90 minutes later.
We had hired a local driver for the day, and his guidance was invaluable. After paying the entrance fee and receiving our sarongs to enter the temple grounds, he helped us arrange a Melukat package, which included a guide, ceremonial sarong and sash, locker hire and the traditional offerings. There is a self-guided option, but I would strongly recommend paying a little extra for the guided experience.
Our guide was absolutely wonderful. He carefully explained the significance of each offering and led us through the prayers and offering ritual before guiding us through the purification ceremony itself. At no point did it feel rushed, staged or performative. Instead, it felt deeply respectful, genuine and incredibly moving. It was one of the most meaningful experiences of our entire trip.
As an added bonus, our guide took beautiful photos and videos throughout the ceremony, allowing us to be fully present in the moment while still coming away with wonderful memories that we'll treasure for years to come.
After changing out of our wet clothes, we spent time wandering through the temple grounds. They are beautifully maintained, peaceful and full of interesting details. Once again, our driver enhanced the experience by explaining the significance of what we were seeing, turning it into an immersive cultural experience rather than simply another sightseeing stop.
If you're considering a Melukat ceremony and are looking for an authentic, peaceful and meaningful experience away from the larger crowds, I can't recommend Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu highly enough. It exceeded every expectation we had and became one of the absolute highlights of our time in Bali.
