A Hidden Baroque Masterpiece in Bavaria

点评：I’m following the Red Route through Memmingen’s old town when I come across a rather unassuming historic building. From the outside, there is little to suggest what awaits inside. Curious, I step through the door—and stop in my tracks.
Above me, intricate Baroque stucco ceilings stretch across a magnificent hall filled with light. The elegant details, the soaring space, and the quiet atmosphere feel more like a princely residence than something I would expect to find in a small Bavarian city.
It is hard to imagine that this place once served as a church for the Knights of the Cross and was later used as a warehouse. Today, it is one of Memmingen’s most remarkable hidden treasures—and yet many visitors walk right past it without ever knowing what lies within.
What makes the experience even better is that admission is completely free. Using the free audio guide in the Lauschtour app, I learn about the fascinating history of the building and discover stories and details that bring the space to life.
As I leave, I find myself thinking: “I never expected to find something like this in Memmingen.” Moments like these are what make the city so special—unexpected discoveries that reveal themselves only to those willing to look a little closer.
