We would genuinely love to visit the Hellfire Club, but as someone with a real fear of dogs, reports of owners routinely allowing their dogs off lead have completely put me off going until the rules are properly enforced.
Public and heritage spaces should be places that everyone can enjoy and feel safe in. Dog owners do not have a greater entitlement to these spaces than children, people who are frightened of dogs, elderly visitors, or anyone else simply trying to enjoy a peaceful walk.
It doesn't matter how friendly or well-behaved you believe your dog is. Someone approaching you doesn't know your dog, and a person with a genuine fear cannot simply switch that fear off because they're told, “Don't worry, he's friendly.”
If the rules state that dogs must be kept on a lead, please keep your dog on a lead. It's such a simple thing to do and allows everyone to enjoy the area.
We really hope the dog-on-lead requirement is properly enforced, because until then I simply wouldn't feel comfortable visiting. Responsible dog ownership means considering the wellbeing of other people as well as your dog.
