Blue Bridge Replacement: Half a Decade In
Johnson Street Bridge的点评
点评：It’s hard to believe, but we’re already five years in to the new Johnson Street Bridge. A part of me wishes I’d taken the time to review the previous incarnation – dubbed “iconic” by the CBC and lovingly called the “Blue Bridge” by the city – because of its history (opened 1924) and loose ties to the famous Golden Gate Bridge (Joseph Strauss designed both), but I just never got around to it. And that’s kind of a shame since the old Blue Bridge certainly had a lot of character – something most contemporary bridges lack. We need only think of the Port Mann Bridge outside Vancouver and its replacement in 2012.
In any event, the new Johnson Street Bridge – a contemporary lift Bascule Bridge – isn’t without its charm. It is the largest bridge of this type in Canada; it has a sleek structure; it has three lanes for vehicles, bikes and pedestrians; and it lights up at night . . . which I admit actually looks really nice along Victoria’s Harbour area. I just wish I had a better camera to capture the nighttime magic! In fact, when the bridge lights up at night, it turns a beautiful blue colour which, I have to assume, is a nice nod to its Blue predecessor.
Besides its sleek design and functional purpose, this bridge also holds a rather dubious claim to fame: When it was finally finished, it won the “Teddy” award from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation after its costs ballooned from the projected $63 million to $105 million! Yikes! I wonder if this new structure will last over 90 years like old Blue? Given society’s tendency towards planned obsolescence, I’d be surprised. . . ;)
