点评:One of the interesting things to do around Kaikōura is to visit the Kaikōura Peninsula Walkway which starts from Point Keen on the peninsula around a 4km drive from the town centre. There is a sizeable carpark there, public toilets, direct access to the rocky shores and walkway which leads along the peninsula coast and seal colony.
The colony mainly features fur seals which we were able to view recently in high numbers. They are basking on the rocky shores, playing in rock pools and swimming in the shallows for what felt like a couple of kilometres. Lots of pups at this time of year (March 2026) and was interesting to see how generally comfortable the seals were with quite a few human visitors around.
Note: There is signage about not interfering with the seals in their natural habitat. Must stay 10 metres away, not possible at times when seals are basking right next to the trail but best to give them as much space as possible. Obviously, don't touch nor try to feed the seals. Was happy with the conduct of everyone we saw on the day. When humans are respectful of nature, it is much better for the wildlife and makes for a very good overall experience for us as well.
