点评:The MAC is one of those museums that doesn't need to be enormous to be memorable. The collection is relatively compact, but beautifully presented, with immaculate cars from very different periods sharing the building with art and some rather dramatic architecture.
The building is almost as much part of the experience as the cars. Take the lift up and make your way gradually down through a wonderfully theatrical mass of concrete, open spaces and industrial details – including some spectacularly heavy, clanging doors that lend parts of the museum the atmosphere of a particularly stylish high-security facility.
For us, the highlight was unquestionably the 1950s and 60s American machinery. Seeing a Pontiac Bonneville Convertible, Ford Galaxie, Corvette C1 and Impala SS at close quarters is quite different from seeing them on screen. The dimensions are extraordinary, the interiors seem to go on forever and the chrome, fins, instruments and little pieces of period gadgetry are fascinating. They are wonderfully extravagant reminders of an era when nobody seemed particularly concerned about making a car fit into a parking space.
The changing nature of the exhibitions is also a reason to check what's showing before visiting. This isn't a vast permanent collection that takes an entire day to work through; it is more of a carefully curated mixture of cars, design and art.
Admission isn't particularly cheap for the size of the museum, but children up to 12 being free helps.
It also works very well as part of a day in Singen rather than as the sole destination. The relatively new CANO shopping centre is close by in the centre of town, with plenty of shops and places to eat, so the two make an easy combination. As it is, Singen is close enough to Schaffhausen, Konstanz and Meersburg.
A stylish, slightly eccentric and very enjoyable museum and definitely worth a visit.
