点评:Arriving a day early for a two-week tour, someone at the hotel read the tour itinerary and suggested that I visit the Acropolis Museum, as it was not included in the tour. Glad he did! This modern museum opened in 2009—atop the ancient city from which some of the exhibits on display were excavated. The building is an architectural marvel. Concrete pillars for the building’s structural support allow visitors to enjoy touring an archaeological “Excavation Museum.” The grounds and several windows feature views of the Parthenon.
Be sure to purchase the audio guide, a tutorial of each exhibit. My custom is to start at the top floor and work my way down. There are countless exhibits–more than 4,200 artifacts, plus the “Excavation Museum.” Artifacts at the Pantheon and other sites are replicas—the originals are housed in this incredible museum. Far too many exhibits to mention in a brief review, the accompanying photos indicate some of the marvels I enjoyed. Of particular note, when missing sections of sculptures are filled in, there’s a sharp color contrast to indicate the replacement. The color of ancient stone could have been matched and one would not notice. The craftsmanship of those who reconstructed fractured sculptures is incredible. Photos are not allowed in some sections, though I did not see any signs indicating this. When capturing an image, a staff member approached and cautioned me not to photograph artifacts in that section.
Plan to enjoy a full day at this exquisite must-see museum.
