For a unique experience at Crater Lake, this is a must do, at least once

点评：Taking the standard boat tour is recommended, at least once. The easy parts are hiking down Cleetwood Cove Trail to access the boat pier where the tour originates and then sitting in the boat while a guide provides a history of Crater Lake. You’ll be able to see features on the caldera up close around the lake and in the Lake (yes, in the Lake). I was especially enamored of the Devil’s Backbone structure (it’s as if there was a giant shark underneath).
The standard boat tour essentially takes you around the inside of Crater Lake, past Wizard Island and then around the Phantom Ship feature while providing viewpoints of waterfalls and other interesting features in the caldera. Near the end of the boat tour, the guide offers to fill up a water bottle with Crater Lake water so you can get a taste. Tastes like chicken. NOT. Tastes like bottled water.
Note that these were the easy parts. The hard part now is hiking back up Cleetwood Cove Trail. But it’s worth the effort since the boat cruise offers views of the caldera that you’re not able to see while on the rim. It is reported that boat tours will end before the year 2025 is out, as Cleetwood Cove Trail and the boat piers undergo renovation (reportedly, for up to three years).
Even if there are no boat tours, you can still have a great time visiting Crater Lake. We didn’t have a chance, due to time constraints, to hike any of the various trails around Crater Lake. If possible, stay at the Crater Lake Lodge.
