Catastrophic Public Transport
Praia da Figueirinha is magnificent, but access has become a real nightmare due to the catastrophic organization by the City Council.
I completely understand the decision to close the road to private vehicles in order to protect this natural area. However, it is totally unacceptable that the bus service introduced to replace this access is so inadequate.
The problem does not occur only on weekends. It happens every day during peak hours, between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., when hundreds of people are returning from the beach.
On Tuesday, July 28, I experienced an absolutely outrageous situation. I joined the queue at 5:20 p.m. There were about ten people in front of me and around twenty behind me. The bus scheduled for 5:45 p.m. simply never arrived. Meanwhile, the 6:00 p.m. bus was already there. The driver remained inside the vehicle for more than twenty minutes with the air conditioning running, while hundreds of people waited under the blazing sun without any information.
The queue eventually stretched to around 500 meters. There was no shade, not a single drinking water fountain, and no shelter of any kind. Families with children, elderly people, and tourists were left exposed to the intense heat, with some even suffering sunburn on their scalps. Despite the large crowds being entirely predictable, no additional buses were provided.
The bus doors only opened at around 6:00 p.m., and the bus finally departed at approximately 6:20 p.m. I waited for almost an hour, and many other people had to wait even longer.
What is most incomprehensible is that there would be a very simple solution: operate a frequent shuttle service to Avenida Luísa Todi, or another central location in the city, where passengers could wait for the next bus in decent conditions. Instead, people are simply left abandoned in the scorching sun.
This level of disorganization is incompatible with a tourist destination of such high quality. It shows a profound lack of respect for visitors as well as for the residents of Setúbal. The Portuguese display remarkable patience, but in many other European countries, this kind of mismanagement would have triggered widespread public outrage.
An exceptional beach deserves transport services of the same standard. Unfortunately, the exact opposite is the case.
