点评:Our family visit to Lewes Flea Market didn't end very well. But firstly, I absolutely fell in love with their collection. We spent nearly an hour and half there (or perhaps more) and I could have happily wandered around for longer for the love of versatile items they keep- including decorative, furniture, wall art, jewellery, crockery etc. etc. (list is endless). I stumbled upon a beautifully crafted, mirror embedded - wooden window, which I have been looking to buy for years for one of my walls! My husband went downstairs to negotiate the price while I was still upstairs exploring. When I came down I was told that the price was reduced to some extend with no further possibility. I paid cash to one of the two staff at the till and was smiling and trying to engage with him as a customer, to overcome his very odd mannerisms of apathy and cold vibes. It was almost as if he wasn't happy about making the sale to us. Then came the moment when I asked about any provision for wrapping the item, this time the senior staff (the second of the two), rather took it very personally and told me off for repeating a request which was already turned down earlier to my husband. I explained my final destination was London and therefore hoping if he could be a bit more resourcefulness. Out of nowhere he asked me rather loudly if I would like my money back for apparently giving him the impression of discontentment. Only because I requested to get some help with wrapping the item and he didn't have any such option. The issue isn't due to the lack of such provision despite of dealing with old and fragile articles of different shape and size. It was their sheer reluctance to do business courteously; making us feel that we cause tremendous inconvenience to them by wanting to buy the item, was an absolute put off. I tried to reason with him since I really wanted it. But by this time I felt so humiliated and stunned by his insolent manner that I felt literally cornered. He gave me back my money and I gave him a 3 pounds change which was my miscalculation as a result of the effect of this experience. Never mind that now! My husband and 13 year old son who also experienced it left already. It takes a lot to be rude to complete strangers but literally nothing to smile, empathise and acknowledge people. I would like to believe that the place is so very popular only for it's outstanding collection, something that they are acutely aware of, which is why they feel at liberty to display such impolite and pompous attitude towards customers. Nevertheless our day ended really well with a lovely meal at a local restaurant with amazingly courteous staff who even gave us a list of places to visit in and around Lewes and Brighton. Stark difference of customer service between the two places where we spent.
