Good clutch and brakes essential !

点评：I've completed this pass on two occasions in the past 20 years in two different cars. A 1.5 Japanese saloon and a 2.0 SWB 4x4. The most important thing to consider is not to attempt this road if your car isn't up to it and by that I mean if your brakes and handbrake in particular haven't been seen much love in ages you could be in for a world of pain, because once you start the steep ascent from the valley U-turns, unlike in politics aren't an option in many places, so you have to commit. In the same breath your clutch really needs to be up to it and ideally not like 100,000 miles under the belt (oh it will be fine) as it is only when you hit the 30% gradient do you realise you're swimming naked !! You can expect to smell a bit of bit clutch at this point so don't panic.
If you have a proper 4x4 with low gearing it will love this road as it ambles up the 1 in 3 parts with glee at walking pace and you might wonder what the fuss is about.
However in the rain with low visibility it could easily raise your pulse.
In terms of driving advice:
Take it slow and look far ahead for cars coming the other way and hold back when in doubt as there likely may not be passing places at the steeper parts of the pass which can avoid a lot of the drama. Also make sure you get in first gear ahead of the steep parts in good time to avoid hill starting and dab you brakes on the way down and make stop in a passing place to give your brakes a rest on the way down.
If you aren't sure about this road try the Honister pass first from Buttermere up to slate mine to get a feel for whether your vehicle is going to struggle, because if it does your vehicle may not be up to it !!! You have been warned.
