点评:Most tourists will find themselves down by the harbour when they visit Ilfracombe. Its a very attractive little harbour dominated by the controversial, 65 foot tall, Damien Hirst sculpture ‘Verity'. Once you’ve finished deciding whether you love Verity or hate her, its worth taking a little time to walk up Lantern Hill which will be right behind you.
A footpath on the right curves you around the hill, up to the top where there is a tiny little chapel and lighthouse.
The path is steep but its not long and the views as you walk uphill are amazing. At the top, its absolutely panoramic.
The chapel is free to enter (donations are appreciated).
Built as a chapel around 1320, it became a lighthouse as well in 1522. Incredibly, it still functions as a lighthouse today, making it the oldest lighthouse in the country
The small chapel is just a single room. Behind the altar, instead of a religious painting, is an arched window with a view out across the harbour - much more beautiful.
A narrow, tightly twisting staircase leads to upper floors. Amazingly, Mr John Davie lived here as the lighthouse keeper, with his family from 1835 - 1871. They raised a family of 14 children. I spent most of my time here trying to work out where everyone slept. There was barely room for 14 people to all be inside the house at the same time, let alone sleep.
Its only a quick visit because its so small.
