点评:Brough Castle is two minutes off the A66 with plenty of free parking and free entry. It's an interesting place to visit if you want to break up a journey into the Lakes.
The castle was built in the 12th century by the Clifford family and used to defend this part of England from the Scots. Although the castle fell into disuse after the Middle Ages and was left to fall apart , it's still good to visit as you can wander around the keep and the great hall and the views across the Pennines and the Eden Valley are excellent. Note, the castle is unsuitable for people with mobility problems and the weather, even in summer, can be unpredictable.
The tea room and the vending room next to the castle are recommended if you have more time. The tea room sells a wide variety of ice cream, cakes, sanwiches and drinks, and isn't too expensive, although it can get very busy. Also you can obtain fresh milk and ice cream from the vending room.
