点评:We had doubts about finding ethical animal experiences in Japan, but this is one of them!
We read many of the reviews before we chose to go, and one that reassured us was from Valerie P, who is a biologist and seabird specialist. They said that here, the animals’ welfare is primary and profit is second, and the owls were obviously happy and relaxed.
That was exactly the experience we had.
Most of the owls are rescue birds that can’t be released back into the wild, or were pets that could no longer be cared for by their owners. They get at least 12 hours of free flight time each day. They are tethered to their perches in the cafe, but one of the owners explained that’s for their own safety, as 40 owls flying around could cause accidents and injury between owls.
The owners are delightful people and clearly care deeply about the owls.
Knowing that these are the kind of circumstances the owls are living in, and then seeing for ourselves how relaxed and well cared for the owls were, we were able to fully enjoy this absolutely magical and peaceful experience being up close with the owls.
One of our best experiences in Japan!
