点评:The ruins of the main fortress of the formerly sprawling castle grounds stand high above Tavira and are open to the public free of charge. Right next door, you will find the church of Santa Maria do Castelo which rightly has a separate listing on Tripadvisor. On the other side of the church is Tavira’s Camera Obscura, housed in an unattractive water tower from the 1930s.
Most people will approach the castle ruins on foot because public parking in its vicinity is extremely scarce. The walk up along steep, cobbled streets and some stairs can be challenging and will not suit everyone. It’s possibly unsuitable altogether for wheelchair users and families with prams / strollers.
I don’t think the castle ruins alone are worth the trek uphill, so you might ensure to make your way there during times when the neighbouring church is open to visitors and take in a bit of local culture whilst up there. Due to the ruinous condition of the castle, the interior is now taken up by a small but well-maintained public garden.
Those brave enough and able can climb one of the narrow and steep stairs up to the walls’ walkway and take in limited views over the historic town centre of Tavira. Better views can be had from the church tower.
