点评:This is one of the churches in Pampanga that were directly affected by Mt. Pinatubo when it erupted in 1991. However, the disaster came four years after when some of the materials spewn by the volcano and deposited on its slope were washed away and carried downslope by rain waters. It's called "lahar" and it came rushing down in 1995 burying half of this beautiful 16th-century church. People fled and abandoned the church for a while. When the situation became safe, they returned and started restoring the church, ŕaising its floor level, building new entrances, etc. and that's what visitors can see today.
Notwithstanding the disaster that hit San Guillermo Church, its original beauty still shines through. One can still imagine how beautiful the church must have been before it was buried by lahar half-deep. Its belfry must have been truly majestic. Its interior must have been lovely, etc. All of this is really worth-visiting. There's also a museum that documents the tragic event and puts on display some items that were saved from the old church.
