Warning about Road conditions to this waterfall.
High Shoals Falls Trail的点评
点评：Warning I am writing this to hopefully give others info needed before attempting a drive to this waterfall. The road to this waterfall is in terrible shape. Unfortunately I did not do my usual research as I had heard how beautiful this was and never thought that the road to get there would be so difficult. Even when it’s in good shape I would not take a normal car up there.
There are 2 entrances to drive up the mountain to the so called parking area at the falls trailhead. There is enough room for about 6 cars to pull over on the edge of the mountain and park. The GPS took us to is Indian Grave Gap Road. You have to ford a stream then follow a very narrow winding road with numerous curves and switchbacks. If a car is coming back down this road someone has to back up until you can find a safe pull over to be able to pass. With no parking availability when we arrived we continued on the route past the trailhead. We passed the one place we would have been able to turn around but thought it would be ok to continue. Wrong move! Deep ruts, downed trees and major washouts.
This route continues to Tray Mountain Road. It doesn’t get much better for a few miles but then becomes gravel as this area is not part of the park and there are a few houses and a lodge along the route.
I read where someone parked at the access road and hiked up to the trailhead. That is doable for younger people or those who are in shape and hike a lot. I wish we could have gotten to the falls to at least make the journey worthwhile. With limited parking you have to get there early to get a spot. Lesson learned to do more research before starting out! Hope this helps others not to make our mistakes.
I plan to contact park services as there should at least be signs stating the road is difficult. They need to find a way to add turn arounds and more parking.
