点评:This imposing, ceremonial gateway to the Acropolis and Parthenon was built in the 430s BC by Pericles and was intended to create a wow factor.
It was part of an expansive building programme designed to revive and glorify Athens. All who entered the Acropolis would now first pass through this monumental stairway and gate. Not until they reached the top, would the view of the Parthenon and other statues and buildings suddenly open up in front of their eyes and probably take their breath away. It still has that effect today.
However the experience is not for the faint-hearted. It’s like being in a scrum. Add in a 30+ degree temperature and an unrelenting sun and the level of discomfort starts to skyrocket.
It’s impossible to stop or even pause on the way up because you’re carried up the steep, zig-zagging stairway by a surge of people and guards are constantly urging people along and preventing anyone from lingering.
It’s difficult to see take it all in. It was pretty overwhelming.
Two features to notice in particular are the Monument of Agrippa (on your left as you walk up) and the tiny temple of Athena Nike, perched up high at the edge of the cliff on your right.
Such was the momentum of the crowd, I missed both. I overlooked the Monument Of Agrippa and had already passed beneath the temple before I realised. It’s one way traffic only and there’s no way I could’ve gone back. However luckily you get a second chance to look at anything you miss when you exit. You return back down the same way but on the opposite side of the stairway.
If like us, you enter the site from the south gate (opposite the Acropolis Museum), you approach the Propylaea from around the side via the Theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon. This meant that you miss out on that first impression of standing at the base of the Propylaea and seeing it front-on, in all its imposing glory. In this case, make sure to stop when you exit the site through the Beule Gate, and turn back to see the Propylaea in this light.
TICKET TIP: I’d highly recommend buying the combo ticket. At €30, it is excellent value. It lasts for 5 days and includes entry to 7 ancient sites. Entry to the Acropolis on its own is €20 so if it is your first time to Athens, it makes sense to buy this ticket (unless you’re here in winter when many sites are half price).
