Long scenic bike trail, great views in places, mixed quality surface to ride on

点评：I walked or cycled sections of the Parenzana in Croatia on 5 separate days recently, while leading a 2-week holiday based in Porec. Twice I walked with a group of guests on the well-maintained section from the old Zavrsje station to the site of the Oprtalj station, which includes two short tunnels, one long one and three impressive viaducts, where not surprisingly we saw a dozen or so cyclists in a couple of hours. On another two days I walked the last 3km or so to Motovun from the west, again on a wide and well-maintained section and including the tunnel under part of the town, and with fine scenic views as you near Motovun on the hillside above. The longest section I tackled with a friend on hired mountain bikes - from Porec the 25km inland to Vizinada and back. It’s not easy to find the start of the trail in Porec which seems extraordinary given how well signed the many other shorter cycle routes are. Once on the trail it’s easy to follow but the surface is very variable, including tarmac, gravel, rutted farm tracks and some extremely muddy sections if like us you tackle this section the day after heavy rain. You definitely need mountain bikes, too, not hybrid or cyclocross bikes. There are very few cafes en route - basically none till you get to Vizinada, after leaving Porec, so take supplies! There are some delightful views especially as you head towards Motovun and can see it in the distance, and it’s generally attractive countryside (lots of vineyards and olive groves) - provided the surface is good enough to allow you to look around while riding. An interesting ride, mostly flat or with gentle inclines only, and maybe a good ride to do over 2-3 days if you want to ride the entire length including the Slovenian and Italian sections.
