点评:This quiet little museum was one of the highlights of a five week trip to Japan!
My husband and I were the only guests on the morning we visited, which shocked me because I could reality lose hours of my life getting lost in the magical universes inside the kaleidescopes on display. Most of the museum is interactive - you can look through and turn many of the kaleidoscopes, and genuinely play with some of the more novelty ones. Half of the museum is dedicated to interactive kaleidoscopes, while the other half hosted an exhibit of an artist who makes clay sculptures and, of course, more kaleidescopes.
The staff were absolutely wonderful. As my husband and I were the only guests, we had the full attention of the lovely women working on the main exhibit floor, who helped show us how some of the novelty kaleidoscopes worked, and also took photos of us in one of them.
The gift store is almost as much of a museum as the museum, with EVEN MORE kaleidoscopes to (gently, you break it, you buy it) look through, and a build-your-own-kaleidescope table. (I didn't make one, but it looked like great fun!) My husband and I both bought little pocket kaleidoscopes which refract whatever you point them at, which we then took to a nearby Japanese garden to go stare intently at mossy rocks and snow with.
I highly, highly recommend the Sendai Kaleidoscope Museum! It's a little treasure trove, and one of my favourite places in all of Japan.
