点评:Boat Rental at Dolphin Ski Club
I tried and failed to find tips about hiring a boat so I hope this helps. Also wanted to shout out and thank Dolphin Boat Hire in Skala too where we hired a small motor boat, costing 150 euros plus 70 euros fuel.
We had booked by WhatsApp a month earlier. Mike the owner had responded promptly. We had gone down to meet him the day before our hire just to show our face and agree a start time.
This was the first time we had hired a boat. I had no experience before of sailing, let alone driving a motor boat.
Me, my wife and three kids 16,14 and 11 got onboard the boat at Skala harbour at 10am and returned to the Dolphin beach kiosk - with the canoe hire - further South at 5pm.
The boat had a cool box, a sun cover for part of the boat, and compartments for our belongings. We took our swimming stuff and lunch. The boats cushioned seating was comfortable. A drop down ladder to the sea and a small platform to dive off were provided at the back of the boat.
We had booked the boat earlier in the holiday but the wind on the day was too strong and so we got a message first thing to say our trip was cancelled.
Not Dolphin’s fault as this was the coast guards’ decision. It would have been nice knowing beforehand this might happen so not to get the kids up early and disappoint them.
On the rearranged day Dolphin’s Harriet(?) and assistant kindly picked us up at our nearby hotel and dropped us off after the trip. That was a free kind offer. All the staff were friendly and polite.
We were given a run down and instructions on the boat, the controls, laying anchor and where to go and not to go.
Ironically on the day we hired the boat the sea around Skala seemed just as choppy as the cancelled day as the wind strengthened. But we were told once we got further North towards Poros the waves would settle which they did.
We had not hired a motor boat before. Had my family not been good swimmers I probably would have waited for a calmer day / time or recruited a crew hand with experience, for more than the five minutes of instructions I got to drive the boat and get familiar with the set up.
In the end there was no substitute for just getting on with it and learning by doing. Which I did. But the first 45 minutes and first stop were unnerving as the wind got up.
Here are some other learnings:
- passengers on the boat have to be evenly distributed to balance it. Early on when the waves were choppy this was really important. For the first 45 minutes we went slow at about 5 or 6 knots so to keep the boat as level with the waves as we could, and ride the bigger waves.
Later when the waves calmed, we increased the speed. When it was fairly calm we could open the throttle and the get the front of the boat up and speed up to cruise at about 15 -17 knots. We slowed when conditions changed.
Ladder - don’t forget to hoist the ladder after exiting a beach stop, as it will put a drag on the boat.
Anchoring procedure - before anchoring reverse a little so the momentum of the boat takes you away from the shore. Then drop anchor with two or three extra meters of rope so the line is at an angle from the sea bed.
Boat Controls - I’m not mechanically minded so had a few concerns before the hire. But the controls are simple. Like an automatic car, with an extra control to lift the propellor up and down ahead of anchoring.
- Be vigilant with other boats. We kept a wide distance from other boats as well as the coast. Particularly you have to watch out for the wash of other boats; and obviously give the shore line a wide 400-500m birth. You would not want to be doing this ring tired, with a hangover or after a few beers.
- Don’t hire a boat if you are not a good swimmer.
- Do take plenty of food and water, and sunscreen.
- I got my eldest to lower and raise the anchor. It was quite heavy so as a 16 year old boy he got quite into that. But, despite protests, I would not let any of the kids take the boat’s controls. So manage expectations there.
- I was glad of the quality of the boat we hired. The boat was clean and seemed in good order.
We enjoyed the boat hire and would love to do it again. The kids particularly loved it. My wife was extremely nervous until we got to calmer water and then we both were able to relax. We enjoyed this far more than hiring a car for the day. We travelled up to Sami and anchored there for lunch on board. We anchored also at three other pretty tiny coves / beaches with few if any people there. We avoided Antisamos beach which we visited in the car and thought was really over commercial, pricey and pretentious.
Just after passing Poros we saw a dolphin jump over our wake. It was a wow moment and part of a very exiting and enjoyable day.
If there was one thing I would have done differently it would have been to have had 45 minutes of instruction driving and anchoring before taking the boat out on my own. I would have paid extra for that. That was something I should have asked for and I’m sure the owners would have obliged if I had done so.
