点评:This is an impressive museum; it is impossible to visit any museum that gives a complete picture of a nation's culture, history and identity (this museum unites 16 separate collections), but in our opinion three aspects of this museum make it a 'must-see' for any visit to Georgia.
Firstly, the ground floor hall exhibition dedicated to the nation's archeological history is a fascinating collection that informs the visitor of Georgia's rich ancient past. Fabulous exhibits, sensitively presented and with interpretation descriptions in immaculate English.
Secondly, the treasury is mind-blowing. The craftsmanship of the exhibits is mind-blowing, dating back thousands of years.
Finally, on the top-floor, the hall dedicated to the years of Soviet occupation is a dark reminder of an appalling and despotic era in recent history. The scale of mass-murder is incomprehensible, and the bullet ridden cattle truck stops one in their tracks.
There is a cafe, but teas and coffees only, plus a limited selection of other drinks, clean toilets, a cloakroom and two very good gift / book shops.
Time of visit of course varies on the individual. We spent over three hours here, but one can easily spend longer.
