Quincy Mine — A MUST-DO Experience in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula!

If you are visiting Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, do not miss the Quincy Mine! This was one of the highlights of our trip and an experience we will remember for a long time.
The mine tour was absolutely awesome! Walking into the historic mine and seeing firsthand the conditions the miners worked in was both fascinating and breathtaking. Quincy Mine operated for nearly 100 years and produced nearly a billion pounds of copper, and you can truly feel the history when you are underground. The tour also includes the incredible historic machinery, the massive steam hoist, the cog-rail tram ride, and several historic buildings and structures around the property.
Our tour guide was wonderful—very personable, knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about the history. They did an excellent job explaining what life was like for the miners and helping us appreciate just how difficult and dangerous their work was.
Plan to spend around 3 hours here if you want to really enjoy the experience. The guided tour itself is about 2¼ hours, and you'll want additional time to explore the grounds, historic buildings, machinery and museum rather than rushing through.
A few tips for future visitors:
🥾 Wear waterproof boots or sturdy shoes. The mine is damp, and water seeps in from above. The underground walking areas can be wet and rocky, so boots are definitely the way to go. The mine stays around 43°F year-round, so bring a warm jacket or dress in layers—even if it's warm outside!
🧥 Dress warmly! Once you head underground, you'll definitely appreciate that extra layer.
🏭 Take time to explore the surface. There is so much more than just the underground tour. The historic buildings, old equipment, hoist machinery and other remnants of the mining operation really help bring the past to life.
🛍️ Don't skip the gift shop! We found some really nice things to purchase, including unique items featuring artwork and products from local artists. It's a great place to find something special to remember your visit, rather than just the typical souvenirs. The gift shop is located in the historic 1893 Supply Office, which makes even the shopping experience part of the history.
Overall, Quincy Mine was an incredible experience from beginning to end. The history, the mine itself, the machinery, the buildings, the scenery and especially the knowledgeable guide all made this a memorable stop.
If you're traveling through the Keweenaw Peninsula, put Quincy Mine on your list—you won't regret it! It is one of those places where you don't just learn about history…you get to step into it. ❤️💙
