点评:First off let's address the fact that there is a 20 minute climb to the monkeys: It is definitely steep! If you aren't accustomed to walking a great deal or have accessibility issues I wouldn't advise it. My wife and I are in our 50's and walk a lot, it's definitely a bit of a workout but nothing excessive (there were many Japanese toddlers doing the walk without assistance so that tells you something!).
There are also many benches along the way and even fans to help cool you down (it was a beautiful Sunny 30 degree Celsius day when we went).
Once you reach the top you're treated to dozens of monkeys running around unrestricted. This isn't a zoo, the monkeys are free to leave but stay for the guaranteed food source. In September there were many babies which were so adorable!
We avoided the ridiculously crowded hut where you can pay 100 yen for some bananas to feed the monkeys. We didn't see the point when you can walk around outdoors and observe them anyway. It was crowded when we were were but it's large enough an area that you can find fairly calm areas to hang out and enjoy the monkeys.
The admission is very affordable at 800 yen. So why not five stars? The staff were great at keeping an eye on the human/monkey interaction but the grounds were a little unkept. For instance, the trail up had many stairs that were falling apart, crumbling pavement etc. It wasn't a huge deal but gave the place a bit of a run down vibe.
If you're hell bent on seeing monkeys in a less formal setting then keep in mind that there were monkey warning signs in other parts of Arashiyama. If you walk away from the crowds enough and are lucky, you might see them out in the true Wild. That being said, my wife and I did a couple slightly more remote walks over the past couple of days and saw plenty of signs but not monkeys.
