点评:On a recent trip to Rocky Mountain National Park, we decided to make a side-trip to The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. One in our party is a big Stephen King-fan, so we made reservations for the Stanley Hotel Shining Tour. While the Stanley Hotel is a very impressive place, The Shining Tour is a money-grab. Also, it's a bit misnamed.
The Stanley Hotel was originally built as a resort by Freelan Oscar Stanley in 1909. It was later turned into a hotel, although until the late 1970s, the hotel was only open during the summer season. In 1974, novelist Stephen King and his wife stayed here one night. His experience led him to write the horror movie, The Shining. The Shining was eventually made into a movie, although it was not made at The Stanley Hotel. So to call this The Shining Tour is a bit false. However, Stephen King did repurchase the rights to his novel and it was remade into a television miniseries, which was filmed at The Stanley Hotel. The tour takes you through a small section of the hotel, a building that was used house employees and the care-takers cottage. Our guide, Savannah, said that when Stephen King stayed here, he was in room 217. But we didn't get a chance to see this room. Savannah was chirpy and knowledgeable and she told us she works for tips. Sad that The Stanley doesn't pay their guides.
But getting back to the money-grab part, the tour cost us $30 plus they charged us $10 to park. They gave us a $5 token that could be used in the hotel. We were able to use it in the bar. The Stanley has a very nice gift shop, but we didn't find much that we could afford. Everything was outrageously overpriced.
If we could do it over again, we'd rather a tour that just focused on the history of the Stanley Hotel.
