点评:Travelling as husband, wife and son (8 years old) in October 2026. We had one of the lodges, and our experience was mixed. The lodge was fine (in terms of basics) and comfortable, but absolutely not “luxury”, as described. The kitchen / living / dining area is spacious and well-designed. Plenty of cupboard space, lots of crockery and silverware, and even pint glasses (hooray!). The twin bedroom was lovely, but the “master” bedroom left quite a bit to be desired. (Small) double bed? Check. Wardrobe? Check. Chest of drawers? Sort of. Space to swing a cat (nope! I’m a big guy and I literally couldn’t access the side of the bed away from the door.). Bedside tables? Absolutely not. Sockets for phone chargers, etc.? Yes, one, by the door, but no others. The washer dryer was broken (no drying function as the thermostat (?) was broken, according to the error code) so we had no facility to dry towels apart from the over-radiator rack provided. However, as the radiators were electric heaters, you REALLY shouldn’t put washing over them (for the risk of causing a catastrophic fire), so really we were reduced to hanging towels over doors, the backs of chairs, etc. The balcony outside the front door was carpeted in the sort of material you use for doormats, but in all the corners and around all the edges it was black with mould (and quite obviously mould, from the smell). The site itself is OK, if a little sparse and barren. That’s perhaps just the landscape up here, but it feels very much like it was only recently cleared of trees (hastily too, from the number of stumps, root balls and tipped over trunks scattered around) and the lodges thrown up in a hurry. The shop, reception and pool are lovely, as seems the restaurant (yet to experience that!!). The nature is obviously nice and it’s quiet. The biggest bug for us - and this is kind of our fault, too - is that you should avoid this area unless you’re REALLY into cycling, hiking, walking or water sports, because apart from those things, there really is nothing (I repeat - NOTHING) to do. We were reduced to drinking coffee in cardboard cups from a vending machine at a table in the corner of a bicycle rental shop on DAY 1 of our holiday, because there really is nothing to do. We stopped into the only shop in a 20 mile radius at 3:30pm one afternoon to buy some beer and tampons, neither of which they had, and the shopkeeper told us we were lucky as she was just about to close…until April. In terms of service and opening hours, it’s like going back in time to 1945. In terms of “things to do”, unless you’re willing to make a 2 hour round trip every day (at least) to the amazing Hadrian’s Wall sites, you’re really confined to barracks, as they say. Bring books, as much wine as you think you can handle (x 2) and board games / jigsaws, because you’re here for the long haul. You do not, repeat DO NOT want to come unprepared for this holiday!!!!
