点评:Back in the days when Crowland sat in an altogether more watery landscape, Trinity Bridge provided a way to cross a tangle of waterways in the town centre. It now sits - a strange, squat curiosity - high and dry in the middle of a road junction. The only thing I can compare it to is some eccentric folly you might find in the grounds of a stately home.
The sheer age of the bridge is immediately apparent from the wear on its three stone staircases and the statue of King Ethelred on one side is severely but attractively weather-worn (although I believe the statue may have started its life elsewhere).
Climbing up the steep staircases to the central prominence or passing under the attractive arches below, the unique and intriguing nature of the bridge blends with a real sense of times long past.
I wouldn't necessarily travel a long way to Crowland purely for the bridge. However, Crowland also boasts a ruined Abbey which is not only picturesque but includes exceptionally well run and thought out visitor facilities and is free to visit. Combining Abbey and bridge would provide you a very interesting and enjoyablehalf-day visit.
