On 20 January, while returning from North Stradbroke Island to Cleveland, I was on a vehicle ferry arriving at approximately 12:45 pm. During the arrival process, while we were still inside our car on board, there was a strong impact twice, caused by a passenger vessel.
Seeing another boat coming towards us while we were still inside the vehicle was extremely distressing. At that moment, I was genuinely worried about our safety. No announcement was made, no explanation was given, and no reassurance was offered to passengers.
Since then, the passenger ferry service has been cancelled for several days, with the official explanation on the SeaLink website stating “unforeseen circumstances.” There has been no public acknowledgement of what occurred, no clarification, and no confirmation that passengers were checked or that the incident was formally recorded and reviewed.
I sent an email requesting information about the safety incident that occurred on the service departing Dunwich at 11:00 am on 20 January and arriving in Cleveland at approximately 12:45 pm, and to date, I have received no response.
Safety at sea depends on transparency, communication, and accountability. Passengers deserve to be informed when incidents occur, especially when they are frightening and potentially dangerous.
