Unnecessary risk while rafting
U.S. National Whitewater Center的点评
点评：I hardly ever leave reviews, but felt compelled to do so for the WW Center.
Went with my family, including a few kiddo friends (ages 12-13). We enjoyed the zip lines, deep water solo, and SUP/kayaking.
We did the “family level” rafting trip. I would say the orientation and gear check is cursory but the adults in our group made sure to check helmets, gear, etc also. The guide gave very little instruction once in the boat, and despite me telling him the people in the front of the boat couldn’t hear his instruction, he didn’t really speak or give commands any louder.
Despite running the same short stretch of water dozens of times daily, our guide seemed much less experienced and competent than I would have hoped and seemed to have a difficult time maneuvering the boat on the course. He gave instructions too quietly for all to hear and said them too quickly for us to actually execute them, and often in too rapid succession with other conflicting commands. The second go around, our boat was down in a rapid and another boat collided with us such that the 2nd boat was literally on top of me. I nearly asked to get off the boat after this but didn’t want to ruin the time for others, so I went on the third go around.
The third go, Our guide tried to position us to enter a rapid after missing it the first time and in doing so, entered the rapid broadside and hit some rocks, causing the boat to tip violently up on one side, ejecting my daughter and half of the others on that side of the boat, then tipping violently the other way, tipping off me and another person AND the guide, leaving only three children (including one who looked about six) on the boat. I was stuck under the boat but managed to free myself, right in time to surface nose to nose with ANOTHER approaching boat as I was getting pulled back into the channel. Someone on the shore threw my daughter and I a rope and pulled us out onto the concrete slope, but quickly had to go and rescue all the others. We were all a little banged up and really scared but luckily not significantly hurt.
None of the guides nor other staff seemed to be concerned at all about our safety and when I asked about what happened, one got defensive and said, “well all rafting has risks”. I have rafted on ACTUAL rivers with much bigger, unpredictable rapids and I have never felt unsafe before due to the maneuvering of a guide or other boats on the water.
While of course all rating has inherent risks, I will not be returning to take my family to the WW center again. I would say that having young and (in my opinion, under experienced ) guides, coupled with too many boats on the water is an unnecessary and avoidable risk.
