I want to share my experience so others can make an informed decision. During a rafting trip at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, I was severely injured when the raft pinned me against the rocks on one of the drops. The impact was strong enough to slam me several times between the raft and the rocks. I was stuck for about 10–15 seconds, though it felt much longer.
When I resurfaced, I was in shock, bleeding, and in pain. No one threw a safety line or offered immediate help from the outside. I had to ask for help to get out of the water myself. My left shoe and sock had been ripped off, my ankle was bleeding with bone visible, my right arm had large patches of missing skin, and my hip and lower body were badly scraped.
Despite clearly being injured and limping, no one from the staff offered medical support right away. I had to limp all the way to reception, where a young attendant simply handed me a large first aid kit and asked me to look through it for something that might help. She then gave me wet paper towels from the bathroom to clean my wounds.
She tried to call for help but didn’t know where the medical building was, so I was led to the wrong place before finally arriving at a small medical facility. It wasn’t until about 20 minutes after the accident that my rafting guide and a member of my group started helping me properly.
The Whitewater Center itself is a beautiful place, but their lack of preparedness and training to handle serious injuries is alarming. Accidents can happen, it’s an inherently risky activity, but there should be trained responders ready to help.
This was a traumatic experience that left me in severe pain and shock, and there has been no follow-up or outreach from their team since the incident.
If you’re considering this activity, please be aware that while they warn you it’s dangerous, they are not prepared to handle emergencies.
SIT THIS ONE OUT.
