A Mixed Experience at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

点评：Of all the experiences we had during our two-week Sri Lanka holiday, this would probably be the one activity we would choose not to do again.
There is no denying that seeing the elephants up close was incredible. Being able to observe them, feed them, and watch them bathing in the river was a memorable experience. However, we came away feeling quite conflicted about the overall experience.
From what we observed, it felt very tourist-focused. There was a lot of encouragement from staff to take photos with the elephants, pay for additional experiences, and get into the water to bathe an elephant. The one elephant used for the bathing experience appeared very calm and trained to stay in place, while many of the others seemed to have more freedom to move around.
It was difficult not to wonder whether the elephants would rather be roaming freely in their natural environment. Despite the name, it did not feel like an “orphanage” in the way we had imagined, but more like a facility where elephants are kept and managed, with some being used for tourism and events.
Seeing some elephants with chains was also upsetting, and based on what we personally observed, we left questioning whether elephant welfare was the main priority.
While seeing elephants up close was amazing, we feel a more meaningful experience would be seeing them in their natural habitat, such as on a safari at a national park like Yala National Park. Watching these incredible animals living freely in the wild would be a far more special experience.
If visiting Pinnawala, the river bathing area is likely the highlight, but we would encourage others to research and consider ethical wildlife experiences before deciding.
