点评:Ignored a bit because it isn’t near downtown Tucson but worth a visit (11 miles from downtown or 30 minute drive). Since it is on the way to Sabino Canyon, you may want to visit this place on the way to or from that canyon.
About 1/4 fine art and jewelry gallery (Four Corners Gallery & Gift Shop) and 3/4 museum with easy parking and access. The two people at the front desk were busy talking to a group, ignoring others coming in to visit. One of them could’ve easily handled the newcomers instead of both of them taking care of a group since only one of them was answering their questions.
After a long unnecessary wait, I finally got to see ‘The Twisted Road’ examining 200 years of US immigration; ‘Colors to Dye For’ explaining the various dyes used in Navajo textiles; ‘The Dirty Thirties’, about rural migrants fleeing the Dust Bowl; ‘The Weavings of the Diné’ with chief blankets, saddle blankets, and larger blankets; ‘All the Single Ladies’, women pioneers of the American West, as well as a few minor exhibits.
The museum is known to showcase southwestern art, artifacts and textiles. They keenly pursue special exhibitions that address or expose bias in our history, so we can learn from them and hopefully never repeat them. Indeed some of them certainly made me think, ponder.
Well laid out, spacious, clean. Not too pricy. Good mixture of various interests and perspectives via photography, sound, paintings, textiles, sculptures, baskets, etc.
I read in some reviews below that pictures were not allowed but I never saw signs stating that and I wasn’t told that by the front desk staff either. This may no longer be an issue.
