On one occasion, after hearing a call, we stopped along the road to find a ferruginous pygmy-owl calmly waiting for a photo shoot. On our last day, after I mentioned wanting a good trogon photo, three trogons appeared for their portraits.
We spent eight days birding throughout Panama and saw all of our bucket-list birds — toucans, trogons, motmots, owls, and tanagers galore — and also came to love Panama’s landscapes, food, and people, especially Nando and his sons.
