Birkenhead's Cultural Gem
Williamson Art Gallery & Museum的点评
点评：This is truly a gem set in the (post) industrial landscape of Birkenhead. A glorious tenor voice serenaded our arrival - not, sadly a tribute to me and my partner but part of a musical event taking place on a hot summer afternoon. Music appears to be a consistent facet of The Williamson.
Our visit was primarily to view the current (but soon ending) 'The Garden as Muse' exhibition. An absolute delight with skilfully curated works from many periods and styles, a genius notion for a summer exhibition full of lush colours and intense light.
That alone would have made the drive from Chester worthwhile however, today it was at least three for the price of one: in adjacent rooms a fabulous display of some lesser known Pre-Raphaelite paintings. On the other side -and for me hugely exciting - a room full of Japanese woodblock prints along with several subsequent works by artists who have been consciously (or in a couple of pieces unconsciously ) inspired by the delightful Ukiyo-e style.
As if all this were not sufficient soul- food there was a ton more: an extraordinary collection of Liverpool (mainly 18th century) pottery AND what must be the best (possibly only) display of Della Robbia ceramic so closely linked to the Pre-Raphaelites and Arts and Craft.
All in all simply superb.
