Excellent Snorkeling Without the Crowds or Sand

点评：This is a great snorkeling and swimming location for confident and experienced swimmers, with a distinctly local feel. We found it uncrowded, with adults fishing from the pier, kids spearfishing, families swimming, and a diver with scuba gear and a camera—all of whom appeared to be locals enjoying the water.
Despite its name, there is no actual beach here. Instead, a concrete pier remains from the days when this site served as a port for the old sugar mill. A ladder on the pier makes getting in and out of the water relatively straightforward, and the area around the pier is nicely protected and opens up into a bay with plenty of underwater terrain to explore. The water was exceptionally clear, with no waves washing in from a sandy beach to stir up sediment. Snorkeling was excellent, with plenty of fish and invertebrates, along with a few relics from the site's industrial past.
The site has limited shade, so this isn't the best place to spend the middle of the day if you're looking to lounge on shore. But if your focus is on spending time in the water, Mahukona is hard to beat. Sand is in very short supply, which is a bonus if you don't want it all over your gear and body. The ability to park just feet from the ocean also makes this a particularly convenient destination for divers and anyone carrying a lot of gear who doesn't want to schlep it a long distance.
