点评:Doesn't take lots of time to go through. The centerpiece is the beautifully restored pilot house from the steamboat Potomac, which was in service from 1894-1936.
We learned a lot about how steamboats used to be the way people got around between Baltimore, Norfolk, Frederiscksburg, and lots of Chesapeake Bay towns in-between back in the late 1800s right up until 1962. Old Bay Line was one of the big operators, and it's where Old Bay seasoning got its name (although I don't recall seeing this bit of trivia mentioned in the museum).
Steamboat travel could be relatively affordable and was not just for the rich. An economy class ticket was the equivalent of about $25 in today's dollars, and first class was about $40.
The executive director of the museum (a young guy!) gave us a nice intro before we started the tour, and he's obviously passionate about steamboat history and enjoys interacting with the museum's visitors.
We visited on a rainy Memorial Day weekend and it wasn't too busy, maybe a dozen others in the ~90 minutes we were there. The admission price was $7.50 for adults. Parking is free. They have a small parking lot and there's also free street parking right in front.
We also signed up to be a member to help support the museum. Memberships start at $50 a year.
I think this museum would be of interest to children (in addition to adults), particularly because it doesn't take hours to go through. Be sure to let them ring the Potomac's bell. There's also a small play table where they can write old-time postcards with pictures of the steamboat era on them.
Irvington is a small town with several quaint restaurants in the area.
