点评：We weren’t quite sure what to expect on this tour, but we decided to take a chance on it since it was recommended to us by 2 close friends of ours.
Half of my crew was pretty nervous about riding a rickety train deep underground, but in the end I think they felt accomplished at rising to the challenge with bravery and pushing through the awkward experience of riding deep into a rather tightly enclosed space.
Our tour guide was Neil, an experienced miner in this mine from 1971-1975 and he has a lot of interesting stories to tell about his work here. He was assisted by a younger man, I think his name was Joey. You could tell Neil was rather passionate and proud of the work he did here which only added to the experience.
We learned a lot of facts about the operations of the mine over the years, a little bit about the culture that the Phelps Dodge Corporation fostered here, and the evolution of the working implements and techniques over time.
Neil had a good humor about him and made the sort of funny remarks you would come to expect from a classically trained tour guide. Based upon his sorry, it sounds like he really likes working this tour to just keep his mind and body sharp while having some fun each day. His passion and energy really shine through, you would hardly think he is really as old as he is. He is a real treasure and I hope this place does what is necessary to keep him active and in good health.
I have no complaints, but if they want to make improvements they would give him a small amplified microphone so that the folks in the back can hear him better on the walking parts of the tour.
At the end, everyone was pleased with the experience and we walked away with some cool stories to tell and shared memories of this rather unique experience.
