点评:Monday 5th May we visited this Shrine which is located in the in the grounds of Osaka Castle
This is a Shinto shrine which was built in honour of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was the builder of this Castle in 1583. There is a statue of Hideyoshi which stands in front of the Shrine.
The Shrine was built in 1879 by the order of Emperor Meiji in 1879. It was moved to it’s current position in the Castle Park in 1961.
We entered into the grounds of the Shrine walking under the large stone Torii Gate.
We climbed up the steps to the main section of the building which housed the Shrine behind a sliding wooden door with noren curtains in front. The curtains are traditional ritual offerings to honor deities or for special ceremonies.
At the Shrine people pray for success and good fortune and they also leave offerings.
The Shrine building is flanked on either side by prayer areas, this completes the front area of the building.
This along with other elements of the building they all sit under the rather impressive green gabled roof, which we initially thought to be tiled.
We were informed that the roof is constructed with Hinoki Cypress bark. The roof with several layers and sloping sections has numerous finials, known as Chigi, around the edges and eaves.
We could see other sections of the building as we walked around, all topped with style roof.
There were a number of large stone lanterns in the grounds, some had figures inside. A number of Shinto Temple lion dogs, known as komainu or shishi stood in front of the Shrine. They were wearing with red bibs (maekake), to ward off evil spirits and diseases.
There was small building nearby to the Shrine which appeared to be some form of washing area. The Martial Arts School stood behind here.
