点评:This is the seventh of "The most beautiful villages of France" that we have visited. We parked in the lower village near the Roman ruins of the Sites Archéologiques De Vaison la Romaine. We got to see only a little of this site and the lower village because we had limited time and our aim was to go to the Haute-Ville medieval village section on the hilltop above the river, about 15 minutes walk away.
Once you cross the Roman bridge the streets rise quite steeply. The initial section has some restaurants, ice-cream shops and galleries. You go up the winding streets between the stone houses and walls. The paths are cobblestone but most have a centre section with better grip which is easier on the feet. We walked to the top of the hill to the chateau which is undergoing renovation and isn't open for visitors. From here you get good views both sections of Vaison-la-Romaine and of the surrounding plains and mountains. Coming down we went into the Eglise Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-de-l'Assomption which is now displays various art works. There is a small charge to visit. This church is part of the ramparts and stands the cliff edge. It has required stabilization of the cliff which is ongoing. Views of it from below are quite impressive.
