点评:Saint Ciaran (515-549) was a victim of the plague but before that, he founded his monastery on the banks of the River Shannon. Over the next several centuries, it became a focal point for education and learning with students pouring in from throughout Europe. Even surviving the Viking raids and Anglo-Norman wars, and of course that plague that killed its founder, it continued prosperous until hefty and multi-married King Henry VIII ordered in 1552 the dissolution of monasteries. Of course he gained their wealth. There is so much to see here: round towers (two of them), several temples, decorative grave crosses, the Nun's church with its fine Romanesque architecture from the 1100s. Learn about the Round Tower whose bell was stolen by English soldiers in 1552 and never seen again. the small church/temple here is Temple Ciaran, site of pilgrimages to his burial site. The main cathedral's "whispering arch."
