点评:We had an amazing walk through this forest with our friends. We drove there from Aberdeen, passing along the river Spey and counting the number of distilleries we passed! We also passed the Walker factory, where those delicious and ubiquitous shortbread biscuits come from!
Arriving at the edge of the forest in the late morning, we started straight out on the walk. Rothiemurchus sits within the Cairngorms National Park, and it was interesting to know that part of the forest is actually under the private ownership of a family - what a responsibility!
It's made of acres of ancient Caledonian forest, with little lochs and lochans (I'm not quite sure whether there are a few or only one of each!) scattered within it.
The forest was quiet and still. We walked beneath all kinds of beautiful trees, in various shades of autumn foliage, with the sound of the river running beside the path much of the way. There were amazing Scots pines of diverse shapes and sizes, and I noticed many of them had what seemed like forked trunks.
Saw many varieties of mushrooms growing beside the path and under the trees, including the pretty storybook red and white spotted ones which could probably kill you quicker than you could say "fairies".
The fallen leaves made the path nice and soft to walk on, and the four hour 7 km trip (at a very slow pace) (with a little picnic stop for coffee and sandwiches) passed quickly.
We went by a small mysterious looking lochan on the way back, and also had great views of the mountains in the distance.
It was flat all the way (unusual compared to the usual Scottish walks we've been on!) and luckily the weather was fine - cold, intermittently sunny, but NO RAIN as had been forecast! Am sure it would have been a very different (soggy, miserable) experience if the meteorologists had been correct!
We felt very privileged to be able to walk through this forest which has been there for hundreds of years.
