点评:This is a must-visit for any enthusiast of the Viking Age! An engaging journey through Iceland’s history told through artifacts, national treasures, and priceless works of art. The atmosphere of the museum during my visit was a warm haven from the bitter cold, with a subtle Christmas theme. The museum is pristine, featuring an excellent, clean design and bright yet warm lighting. During this visit, there was a quiet, relaxed vibe.
As a Viking Age Enthusiast and reenactor, I focused the majority of my visit on the “saga period” exhibitions. It was an absolute joy to see things in real life that I had only ever seen in textbooks! For Example, one of the first items you encounter as you walk in is the Eyrarland Statue. And to see the real-life items that my reenactment garments are based on, such as the nalbinding mittens, was really cool. I was enraptured with the sheer volume of ordinary items essential for survival, but rarely featured textbooks; items like combs, farm tools, shears, and horse tack. I found the descriptions and labels well-articulated and organized, so I was learning new information about the Viking age while seeing both familiar and unfamiliar pieces. For example, one display of swords explained that most of the swords in Iceland were brought from Norway, where they were mostly for self-defense rather than waging war on neighboring kingdoms. My most memorable moment was the bones, which are embedded in the ground with reinforced glass so that you can literally stand over the bones themselves. Seeing the bones of those first Icelanders, including the skeletons of their children, was sobering and mind-expanding.
My advice to fellow enthusiasts of the Viking Age is to make visiting this museum an entire day-long affair, because it can’t all be truly absorbed in a couple of hours (especially if you plan on seeing all the exhibitions from the Catholic period to the present day).
