点评:FYI/warning - Shepler's Ferry & Mackinac island is extremely transphobic.
I had the wonderful pleasure to see Mackinac island again this week. I was an employee 8 years ago. This time I brought along my significant other, that is retired Army.
When we first got to Mackinac City, everything was fine. But when I got in line for the Shepler's Ferry, I was asked to change my clothes! They told me that it was a dress code violation without any explanation! I checked the code, no such such thing.
I told them that I felt uncomfortable, and didn't like the treatment I was receiving. Then they walked away. 5 minutes later a young man directed me to my luggage to change my top! I was wearing jeans, and a summer top. I asked him if this was discrimination going on. Because no one else had to do this but me, the trans woman among what seemed to be a very conservative crowd.
No answer.
We arrived on the island.
The whole trip was bizzare.
I am anishanabe, and I came back to the island for ceremony, cleansing and healing. I barely got this. I felt like if I didn't have my significant other with me, that my life would have been placed in serious jeopardy. The Island didn't seem this dangerous last time. Even an old friend from the island told me to be safe when we arrived.
As soon as the workers of the island heard my lower voice, 90% of them would look down and act bizzare until the next customer. We even had a few horse people scream at us to move. Very rude.
When we took the return ferry 3 days later, I had seen a woman with the same top as me get off the ferry on Mackinac island!
I will go to the island in the future, but clearly on a homemade canoe, alone.
I hope that this, " Culture Center" will reclaim its roots someday.
Thank you.
