A Glimpse into Workhouse Residents
The Workhouse, Southwell的点评
点评:Definitely a different National Trust experience, but certainly one worth visiting as it tells the story of those less fortunate than the owners of country estates.
The workhouse takes you back in time to when people were so destitute that they needed a place to live. The residents checked themselves in, and they were free to check themselves out. But, as with most things, there were certain stipulations.
Women and men were worked hard here as it was believed that if living conditions required extremely hard work, the residents wouldn't want to stay and that would force them to go out and find work elsewhere.
Rooms are set up as they would have been at the time of operation. Clever presentations tell the story of the residents.
I'll admit, it was very sad to learn of the hard lives that these residents had to endure, but I give accolades to the Trust for seeing the importance of preserving these memories that feature the working class and those less fortunate.
We are National Trust members (via Royal Oak), so I cannot comment on the admission cost. The parking lot is within easy walking distance of the building, with working gardens sandwiched in between.
The property also holds a once used hospital/nursing home that one can tour as well.
There is a cafe and toilets are available on the property as well.
