A beautiful Norman castle with gorgeous views of the Sussex countryside!
Lewes Castle & Barbican House Museum的点评
点评:Lewes Castle dates as far back as the Norman conquest of England (mid-11th century) and it is almost unique in that it has two instead of one motte, which is defined as a small hill in the centre of a castle on which a fort is built. Out of the numerous castles in England, only Lincoln Castle has the same structure.
The castle's keep offers magnificent views of the Sussex countryside and as you go up the stairs, you can take the opportunity to learn about the history of the castle through the various information panels, some of which tell the tale of the Battle of Lewes, which took place during the Second Barons' War when Simon de Montfort and his allies unsuccessfully tried to overthrow King Henry III.
Visitors to the castle can also explore the nearby Barbican House Museum, which contains displays about the history of Sussex, as well as a lovely miniature model of Lewes. You can also take the opportunity to see a short film that explores the history of Lewes.
Standard tickets for the castle and museum cost £12.00 but if you wish to visit the nearby Anne of Cleaves Museum, you'd be better off buying the combined ticket for £18.50. Make sure you give yourself at least an hour to explore the castle and museum but half an hour should suffice for the house museum.
