点评:I was visiting Miami for the weekend, and after an amazing dinner at Yamashiro Japanese Restaurant, my friends suggested we end the night at Twist. Unfortunately, what should have been a fun experience turned into one of the most disappointing and humiliating experiences I've had at an LGBTQ+ establishment.
Upon arrival, security was professional in checking IDs and bags. However, I was denied entry because I was wearing flat sandals/flip-flops. I was told my shoes were not allowed because broken glass inside the bar could cut my feet and was instructed to go purchase a pair of closed-toe shoes before I could enter.
Wanting to enjoy the evening with my friends, I left, bought another pair of shoes, and returned.
Once inside, I was shocked to see numerous women throughout the venue wearing the exact same style of open-toe sandals and flip-flops that I had originally been denied entry for. My friends witnessed it as well. At that point, I felt singled out and questioned why the rule had only been enforced against me.
I documented what I saw by taking photos of multiple patrons wearing similar footwear and asked to speak with a manager. Lucas (also known as Ernesto) came over, but the conversation was disappointing from the start. Before I could fully explain what had happened, he interrupted me and said I was repeating myself. When I showed him the photos, he dismissed them by saying they could have been taken anywhere. Even after I showed him the timestamps and explained that I had several witnesses who saw the same thing, he refused to acknowledge the inconsistency.
I then asked him what he was going to do to address my situation as a paying customer who had clearly been subjected to inconsistent enforcement of the dress code. His response was simply, "No. I'm not going to do anything about your situation. Those are our rules."
What was most disappointing wasn't even the decision itself—it was the complete lack of customer service. I frequent establishments across the country and work in the entertainment industry, where guest experience is paramount. I understand that businesses have policies, and I wasn't asking anyone to break the rules. But when it's clear that a guest feels they were treated unfairly, a sincere apology, acknowledgment of the concern, or even a willingness to investigate goes a long way. Instead, I was met with indifference and dismissal.
That response told me everything I needed to know.
As I was leaving, I spoke again with the same security guard who had initially denied me entry and showed him photos of at least six women wearing sandals that looked just like mine. He insisted they weren't flip-flops despite what was clearly visible in the photos.
To make matters even more confusing, several guests entering the club complimented my outfit and expressed that they didn't understand why I had been turned away in the first place.
As someone who was visiting Miami and looking forward to experiencing one of its most well-known LGBTQ+ venues, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and unfairly singled out. I fully respect that businesses have the right to establish and enforce dress codes. However, those rules should be applied consistently to every guest. When they are enforced selectively, it naturally leaves customers questioning whether they were treated differently.
Unfortunately, because of how this situation was handled by both security and management, I won't be returning to Twist, nor would I recommend it to others looking for an inclusive and welcoming experience.
